The World's Children's Prize for the Rights of the Child 2003:
James Aguer Alic
Moses and Elisabeth
Moses and Elisabeth, shown in the picture, were kidnapped from their home in southern Sudan to be slaves, but James Aguer Alic saved them.

For over 13 years, James has been fighting to free thousands of enslaved children. Often, it’s been a dangerous undertaking.
‘We won’t give up until all the children are free,’ says James.

Why has James Aguer been awarded?
288 000 children from all over the world took part in the voting and named James Aguer, Sudan, as the winner of the Global Friends' Award 2003.
James Aguer Alic was awarded for his stubborn fight against child slavery in the Sudan. Children are being kidnapped by militiamen and forced to work from sunrise to sunset. They are forced to sleep outdoors with the animals, they’re fed leftovers, and they are beaten and abused. After over 13 years of struggle, James and his colleagues have liberated over 2,000 children, and their fight to free the rest of the children goes on. James has been imprisoned 33 times, and two of his colleagues were killed when they tried to free children. Today James and his colleagues have the support of Sudan’s government for the freedom of slave children.

When Adut was small, she lived in a village with her two siblings, her mum and dad in a little, round, brown mud-hut with a grass roof. She played with her siblings and tended the family’s cows. They had so many cows that Adut and her siblings could drink milk every day. But all that is like a dream now.
