All the people in the photos have been slaves and were freed by James Aguer. They now live in Cairo, in Egypt.
Ring together with many friends
Ring, 2.30 metres tall, and the friends he marched with for three months when he fled from Sudan.
Ring the tallest refugee
A 15-year-old refugee in Kenya is almost a metre taller than his mates. Ring is 2.0 metres tall, and he wants to be a professional basketball player, like his uncle, in the USA.

The soldiers attacked Ring’s hometown Twic in southern Sudan over and over again. They burnt down houses, the school and the church, and killed people.
’The war’s wrecked everything. I can’t go to school, and I can’t train on the court. What will become of me if I stay here?’ Ring asks his mother and father.
Ring’s siblings say the same thing:
’We can’t stay here waiting to be killed or taken as slaves.’
A few days later, hundreds of children march past Ring’s home. They are skinny, and they either wear ragged clothes or are naked. They ask for food and water.
’Where are you going?’ asks Ring.
’We’ve been marching for weeks. We’re on our way east where there’s peace and schools.’
’I also want to go,’ says Ring. ’Is it far?’
’I don’t know,’ a boy answers. ’We have to go there. The militia have killed many of our parents and relatives, and the planes bombed our schools.’
