Invitation to media: the 10th anniversary of World's Children's Prize

Honouring Decade Child Rights Heroes Graça Machel and Nelson Mandela.
Mrs Graça Machel, one of the world leaders of The Elders (www.theelders.org) is in Sweden to receive the award.

• In presence of ten of the world’s most respected child rights defenders They include: Asfaw Yemiru former street child, who has devoted over 50 years to giving underprivileged children in Ethiopia the chance to go to school. James Aguer, who has, over 20 years, freed thousands of kidnapped children from slave‐labour in Sudan. Somaly Mam, who after being a sex slave as a child, has spent 13 years liberating girls
from sex slavery in Cambodia and giving them rehabilitation and education.
• The ceremony is conducted by children from 25 countries, assisted by HM Queen Silvia
The children conducting the ceremony are experts on the rights of the child through their own life experiences, including as child soldiers, slaves and homeless.
Mrs Graça Machel and Mr Nelson Mandela were voted Decade Child Rights Heroes by 7,1 million children in the World’s Children’s Prize Global Vote. 24 million children in 53 500 schools in 101 countries are informal owners of the WCP.

Graça Machel and Nelson Mandela are
the world’s children’s ‘Decade Child Rights Heroes’
Today, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child turns 20. At the same time, the World’s Children’s Prize is celebrating its first ten years by electing ‘Decade Child Rights Heroes’. Children in villages under the Burmese dictatorship are among those who took part in the Global Vote, in which only under 18s are allowed to vote. The 7,136,222 voting children have elected Graça Machel and Nelson Mandela as their first ‘Decade Child Rights Heroes’.
The children released the news about their Decade Child Rights Heroes at hundreds of Children’s Press Conferences all over the world. They also demanded – on the 20th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child – greater respect for the rights of the child in their countries.

World’s Children’s Prize
reveal the “Decade Child Rights Hero”
7,1 million children worldwide have participated in the decision by voting in the Global Vote for the rights of the child.
Nelson Mandela, sex slave liberator Somaly Mam, and murdered debt slave Iqbal Masih are among the thirteen candidates.

It’s happening all over the world on 20 November. At hundreds of child-led press conferences, the children will reveal who they have elected as their Decade Child Rights Hero.

The jury decides which of the candidates should receive the World’s Children’s Prize for their work for the rights of the child. And the children in the jury really are experts on the rights of the child – from their own experience!
